Hi everyone,

I apologize if you have received this or a similar note last week. I am writing to you to seek your help collecting data for our research project. The goal of this project is to develop a way of developing and supporting realtime peer-to-peer (p2p) interactive applications.

We need to collect enough data to submit a paper this Friday (2 Oct 2009) and we will be conducting our experiments over the next 4 days (28 Sep-1 Oct 2009) pretty much 24/7 to collect the data we need.

Our Project

While you might have heard about p2p in the form of file sharing applications like BitTorrent and perhaps VoIP apps like Skype, what we are trying to do is fundamentally different.

Our target application is a p2p game and unlike conventional networked games that require a dedicated server, our game is hosted by the players playing the game themselves and the game will continue to exist even if some of the players leave the system. Essentially, we have developed techniques to allow a server to fail over somewhat seamlessly when the peer acting as the server leaves the game.

Why our Project Matters

Our project is not about a game. We are trying to develop a fundamentally different way to write networked programs. If our techniques work, it will make it significantly cheaper to developed certain class of realtime interactive programs, like casual games.

How do you help?

It's quite a cute game in my view, and you're welcome to play it. However, we know that many of you are busy people and so we've made it even easier for you to help out. You don't even have to play the game yourself. Just click PLAY! to spawn the game window and check off "Automatically join and play games to level up" and the game will PLAY ITSELF! How simple is that? :-P Just let the program sit in the background and run. It's THAT simple!

The Experiments

Do note that the game will not be exactly the *real* thing over the next few days because we will be doing things like forcing some peers to fail, stress testing the system and collecting performance data. Occasionally if we push too hard, the games might also crash. Finally, because p2p involves quite a lot of handshaking at the networking layer, there might be some delays in connecting to the games. We ask for your patience.

Please be assured also that no personal data will be collected in our experiments. We will only be collecting data on network measurements to evaluate the performance of our system.

I don't click on links in MSN without verifying with the sender.
I have an updated Anti-Virus running on my computer.
I have my Firewall enabled.
I have Spybot keeping track of my registry changes.

But my friends still received that message from me last night. How embarassing (and annoying). Haha.

My hypothesis is that it's not a virus and it wasn't caused by something that is residing on my computer because the messages were sent when my computer was off. Someone received the message at 4AM and I was asleep with the computer off at that time.

If we eliminate a virus/worm as a cause, it means that somehow someone has gotten hold of my MSN user ID and password.

Turns out MSN passwords aren't all that secure. In my search, I found that there are a few ways to "retrieve" MSN passwords. I don't know which works or which method they used. Perhaps they used a vulnerability in Internet Explorer and Windows Live Sign-In Helper? I can't say for sure. Let me know if you know what method they used. It would be interested to find out.

Next, they store the user IDs and passwords in a database. At regular intervals, bots will go through the list and check if you are offline. If you are, they log in using your ID and password and send the messages to your contact list.

You can easily check if someone is online/offline using some online tools
Another method to check if you are online/offline is to have a bot add you on MSN. Once you have accepted the bot as a contact, it will be able to track your online status.

In a secured environment with highest security settings, I visited the URL in order to retrieve the source code of the webpage looking to see if clicking on the link in the message would give me a virus.

I couldn't find anything suspicious in the HTML code, but due to outgoing links pointing to other PHP files, there is a high chance that this entry page is written in PHP as well. Perhaps malicious code could have been executed before the HTML was sent so we shouldn't rule that out too quickly as well.

According to CA Security Advisor Research Blog, the page is a phishing site designed to steal your credit card info.

In summary, this is how I think the Acai Berry MSN Virus/SPIM works:
1) Bot "retrieves" your MSN ID and password. (Which method they use I can't say for sure)
2) Bot stores it in database.
3) Bot checks if you are offline.
4) If you are offline, they log in and send the spam message.
5) Victim clicks on link, wants to get freebies.
6) Victim enters credit card info.
7) FAIL

HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM (if my hypothesis is correct)
1) Change your password.
2) Update to latest version of MSN.
3) Try to identify if you have a bot on your contact list. Send a message to any unknown person and ask "Who are you?"

Disclaimer: This is only a hypothesis that is based on what I've found during my investigation.

3) Open in-game console
4) Type "sv_lan 0"
5) Type "z_difficulty advanced" to set difficulty to advanced (other difficulty levels are also available)
6)Type "map " (when you type "map" with a space, you will get a list of maps to choose from.
7) Wait for the game to load and start
8) When game has started, type "sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0"
9) Wait for your friends to connect to your server

To connect to server
1) Run L4D
2) Open in-game console
3) Type "connect " where is the IP address of the server that was started in the previous part.
4) Kick zombie butt.

Left 4 Dead (Full Game) Split Screen

After tinkering and experimenting with settings for more than 3 hours, I've finally got L4D Split Screen mode to work with the first player on mouse-keyboard and the second player on XBox 360 Gamepad. It really is quite a complicated process...

After much cross-referencing between this thread and this thread, I've finally got it working.

Note: This is for the full game, not the demo.

Here is what I do:

1) Download and place this file to the folder "c:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\cfg\".
2) Plug in your XBox360 Gamepad.
3) Start a dedicated L4D server (any game map will do)
4) Start the L4D game.
5) At the L4D main menu, click on "Options".
6) Click on "Keyboard/Mouse".
7) Set "Allow Developer Console" to "enable".
8) Set "Gamepad" to "enable".
9) Click on the server name at the bottom left hand corner of your screen to join your dedicated server.
10) Once in the game, unplug your XBox360 Gamepad and plug it back in again. The Player 2 light on the Gamepad will light up. *first prerequisite done*

11) Leave the game.
12) Alt-Tab and quit the dedicated L4D server.
13) Return back to L4D.
14) press ~ and type "exec 360controller2.cfg" into the console.
15) type "ss_enable 1" into the console.
16) Click on "Single Player Game" and start the game. The game will now be in splitscreen mode. Enjoy!

Maybe I'll try getting it to work with dual monitors tomorrow. If that works, I won't need to get another copy of L4D so that I can play with my brother =)

I just got back from London.

The important news first: Straw Hat Samurai got runners-up for the Golden Joystick Awards. Stickman Rampage got the award and Ants got the second runners-up.

Oh well. At least I got to meet some great people =) And thanks to all of you out there who supported my game! Maybe I'll try again next year. On the same note, I've got a commission for Straw Hat Samurai 2 from e4.com so look forward to that in a few months time!

London was great. First impression? Grey. Everythings grey.

30 Oct:
Arrived in the morning. Slept till 3pm. Went to this mall (West Field) that just opened in London today. It's the biggest mall in London or something. Nothing much. Pfft. Haha. After that I went to an Irish pub for beer and steak. And after that... Jonathan Coulton concert! It was fantastic! Internet jokes. Pirates. and Zombies. I approve. Very funny. Opening act was by Paul and Storm. They're not bad too! I guess I like songs with funny lyrics.

Hotel was ok but I couldn't figure out how to get the shower to work. The water is either hot or scorching. So I used the bath tub. They provided rubber duckies!

Water in London is chalky and when you boil it, you get flakes floating on top. Makes one thankful of places where you can drink water straight from the tap.

31 Oct:
Went to Golden Joystick Awards. Sat at a table with the other Flash game developers. Nice people. The guy who created Bogus Bunny was downing glasses and glasses of wine and as expected, he puked all over. A little of it got on my shoes and suit. Gross. I got puked on by Bogus Bunny! Argh! Anyway Straw Hat Samurai got 2nd. Everyone thought that I would win but oh well. All the other games that won the awards were FPS too so maybe that's the voting crowd. After that was the after-show party. Just mingled and got to know people. Had a good time. Talked with the e4.com people. Some silly girl kept trying to put bats on other people's shoulders. *shrug*

1 Nov:
Went for this "Royal London Morning Tour". Saw the Crown Jewels, London Tower, 10 Downing Street, London Eye, Buckingham Palace and the changing of the guard.

Quite an enjoyable experience. After that I decided to wander the streets of London on my own. It was rainy and cold though. I dropped by the EA tent and they were giving away 1GB thumbdrives! Sweet! If I had known that they were 1GB at that time, I would have taken more. Heh.

Anyway I couldn't find any free Internet in London (1 pound a minute at the hotel! gasp!) so I went to a mall to steal internets from some random access point to check my email. Then I went to Fordnum & Masons to buy hoity toity tea. It was raining the whole day. Wet and cold. Brrr.

2 Nov:
Supposed to go for another tour to see the Stone Henge. 68 Pounds. But I was dreaming that I was fixing a puppy that broke into two and I overslept. Yes. I missed my tour. Argh. Luckily I managed to get a 50% refund. But still. 32 pounds wasted. Tsk.

So I went to Scotts to eat hoity toity fish and chips (newspaper says its one of the best). It was overrated but the shellfish bisque was nice. Then I went walking along Bond Street and Oxford street. Lots of people. Bought Belgium Truffles and more tea from Whittards.

Flight home. Nothing much. Lots to unpack. Hello Red Alert 3 and Fallout 3 =)

I really wanted to attend the EA Event where they are going to showcase Red Alert 3 (Oooo Red Alert 3...) and the conference Playful: Game Design London. Oh well.

So I've been playing Dead Space recently. Zombies. In. Spaaaaaace. Had some scary moments it did. Then there's Far Cry 2... and Fallout 3 just came out... AND Red Alert 3 (luuurve the FMVs)... so many games, so little time.
