Midterms finally over (sort of)
Midterms are finally over!!! Spent the whole of the midterm break studying for these 4 stupid midterm tests. Argh! Finally it's over... actually not really... I still have one more test on the 12th of October but I heard that it's chicken feet so I'm not too worried abt it =P
Now I can finally start on this project that I have... THAT IS DUE TOMORROW MORNING!!! Busybusybusy...
So anyway, I've been tracking ossvc.exe. It turns out that ossvc.exe activates after you've been connected to the internet for a while (either it activates at random or according to a certain number of bits transferred... I can't say for sure). When it activates, it adds an entry into your Windows Registry startup.
It adds the entry under the name "MsUpdate" in order to fool you into thinking at it is a legitimate Microsoft file. You know that ossvc.exe is evil because if you Google it, you won't be able to find any information on it. Legitimate Windows files have webpages to document them.
After that, it runs all the programs listed in your Windows Registry startup list. This causes a major slowdown in your computer's processing speed.
Following that, it calls tftp.exe (a legitimate Windows file) to download sxd.exe onto your C:\ and runs it. I can't determine what this file does at the moment.
Somewhere along the way, it also uses tftp.exe to download a file and randomly renames it. This file runs and also adds itself to your Windows Registry startup. This randomly named file has the entry name "SPK3".
The effect of this randomly named file running is that it starts taking up your Mem Usage. This can be seen using Windows Task Manager (Crl-Alt-Del).
Somewhere along the line, entries are also added into the Windows Registry to register osscv.exe as a Windows Service. This just makes it more tedious to remove.
The thing about osscv.exe and the randomly named file is that they cannot be located with Window's find file function. Either these files are very well hidden or they are deleted right after they have been loaded into the memory. I still need to study it more to confirm.
Even after removing all traces of osscv.exe from the Windows Registry, the file still manages to find a way to run itself. So this leads me to suspect that there is another .exe file at work here. This file is running and when activated, downloads osscv.exe using tftp.exe. The next logical step in my investigation is to locate this mystery file. So far I have no leads however I suspect there might be a possiblity that it could have something to do with a possible web browser hijack... will update more on my investigation when I discover more.
Meanwhile, I have disabled tftp.exe to prevent osscv.exe from even starting up. This temporary measure seems to work well at the moment =) [Edited: No it doesn't =P Windows doesn't allow u to diable tftp.exe. Dohz.]
[Edited again: I have determined that the virus/worm/trojan watnot is activated by running Internet Explorer. Hence, I conclude that these are the result of a browser hijack. Quick solution: 1) Install Firefox. 2) Use Firefox to download antispyware from TrendMicro. 3) Use antispyware to clear the browser hijack. Situation seems stable at the moment.]
[Edited once more: Using Firefox also kenna =O]

SPK3
I still haven't got back my laptop yet =( ARGH! Can you imagine the inconvenience!?
It seems though that there are many computers experiencing the same problem. I suspect that this is not a hardware problem but actually something caused by a virus/worm/trojan whatnot. The whirling/screaming sound could possibly be caused by increased harddisk activity due to some function of the virus. I can't confirm this at the moment but I suspect something of this nature.
Grrr.
Anyway, I'm temporarily using this other laptop for my work and my warning bells are ringing when this entry "SPK3" suddenly pops up in my Windows Registry "run at startup" files list. I checked Windows Task Manager and you can tell that the file that it references to takes up quite a bit of CPU time that its Mem Usage increases every second. The file doesn't allow me to "End Process" it either. The filename of this file is made up of random letters so it turns up with a different filename at different times. However, the MO of the files are all the same and they all have links to that "SPK3" so I'm assuming that they are of the same origin. Quite smart using random filenames... this ensures that people trying to find information regarding that file on the internet will have a tougher time determining if it is a virus or not.
I'm thinking that it's the same thing that killed my precious baby. I can't find any news about it yet so either I'm way off the mark or it's a new virus. Will try to look more into it.
Anyway, just to fill your time:
Here's an addictive game thingie. (I'm currently at stage:ascorbin but stopped bcos I have to study for my midterms =P Will continue playing later when I've got more time. It's really super addictive!)
[Edited: I think ossvc.exe is evil too.]
[Edited again: I finally found the mp3 version of
Leftbank 2!!! Woo & Yay!]

Blue Screen of Death
It's official. My computer just died on me.
Last night, my computer gave me the Blue Screen of Death for the first time. (I took a picture of the BSoD but I just realized that the only way to upload is it through the IR on my comp... which of course isn't working at the moment.) It started acting a little slow a few weeks ago but this time it finally committed suicide. Well it's not exactly dead yet... but it takes forever to start up and works in twitches and spasms from time to time. Think panadol overdose or something.
oh and my laptop whirls and vibrates violently and gives off a screaming sound when I tilt it abit...
So anyway I brought it to the Computer Center to get it fixed but after waiting at least 1 hour for my turn, they Computer Center guy told me that they do not deal with hardware problems and that I had to bring it to the Service Center instead. So I did.
The Service Center is next to LT26. This means that it will take me approximately 15 minutes to get there. When I got there, the Service Center guy told me that I had to bring my laptop invoice along in order to verify my warranty status... so I had to travel back to hall to get it and then back again. Argh.
Anyway armed with only 2 128MB thumbdrives, I tried to backup whatever I could. Due to my comp moving like a 286 or something, it took me forever to backup my most important files... inclusive of my Dungeon Seige 2 savegames =P My comp eventually hung on me and I decided that I had managed to get the bare necessities out. ie. I gave up.
So I asked if they would help me keep my old files. Diplomatic like they are, they said, "we will try our best but we can't guarantee anything."
Of course that means: ALL DATA WILL BE DELETED.
In fact I peeked at the job form that they filled up... and those exact words were in the remarks section.
ALL DATA WILL BE DELETED.
*sob* All my files gone. Damn! Imagine Lut without a computer. Arrrrgh! I'm practically handicapped now!
It just isn't my day. So I'm supposed to be at a party later in the evening... then I missed bus 95 but 151 came next and since it supposedly could take me to an MRT station, I boarded it. Perhaps I was too distraught over my late-laptop that I missed the stop or something. I ended up in Newton. And forgot to beep my card when I got down. Dohz. So I took a taxi to Tanah Merah instead. Oh well, at least I got to my friend's house in one piece =)

Training
Small post:
Cool French Adverts telling you that it's better to take the train.
FFVII
Final Fantasy VII Advent Children is out! Damn pretty movie! I'm inspired to go play FFVII even though I heard that the ending is actually quite bad...
Anyway here's the torrent peeps. And unless you understand Japanese, you might need
this english subtitle file.Just put the subtitle file in the same directory as the video file. If you don't see any subtitles, you might need to download
VOBSUB from here.
So much trouble just for one movie? Trust me. It's worth it.
[Edited: Wait! There's more!
Final Fantasy VII: Last Order! A 25 minute long movie that is set before the time of the actual game. It's not subbed yet though =( This can be found released with the "Ultimate Edition" of FFVII:AC.]
[Edited again:

Congratz to BB03 on getting into the Top 3!!!
I was at Liquid Room to watch the
Perfect 10 98.7FM Beatbox Competition and I witnessed contestant BB03 battle his way through the Top 5 to enter into the Top 3. This means that he will be competing next week to get into the Top 2... with the final round as the opening act of the Black Eyed Peas Concert!
BB03 is the youngest of all the contestants... of 15 years of age... he's only in Sec 3!
and oh... he just so happens TO BE MY BROTHER!!! *grinz*
What can I say? I damn proud of him. In fact, I've always been proud of him. This merely adds to the list that makes me proud of him =P
What's beatboxing, you say? In short, it's vocal percussion. Making drum noises with your mouth. Want a better idea?
Listen to some of his beats then. Here's his 98.7FM radio interview that was aired last Wednesday. One more radio interview coming up this week... so do listen out!
Competition for the Top 2 placing. This coming Saturday 17/9 at the Liquid Room. 10PM. Free entry. Come down to support your favourite beatboxer *cough

I love NM2208
NM2208: Principles of Visual Communication.
In other words, it's an Art & Crafts class. Super fun! Haven't been doodling for such a long while... I almost forgot what it's like to just spend hours just wasting time away by drawing crap on paper.
Anyway, the pic below was done as a take-home assignnment. We were supposed to design our names into something related to an topic we want. I chose Mecha. Y'know, the Gundam-giant-robot type of Mecha. Yeah.

I loved it so much that I made it into another LUT! Wallpaper. Hurrah.
1024x768 1200x800Oh! Mr Reddy, the teacher, really looks like
Sanjeev from Nevashut! The resemblance is uncanny. LOL! [Edited: The Nevashut site is a little slow now due to the contest being over =( It was quite fast when I first posted the link tho =P ]
